Telecom is one of the easiest technical fields to break into — that's part of what makes it great. Many roles (fiber tech, cable installer, tower tech, field tech) need only a high school diploma plus paid training or a short certificate. You don't have to be a genius — you need to be curious, reliable, and good with your hands or with problem-solving. The engineering roles take more study, but you can start earning and work your way up.

For most technician roles, no. Fiber techs, cable installers, tower climbers, and NOC techs typically enter with a certificate, an associate degree, or on-the-job training. Industry certifications like CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, and FOA fiber certs matter more than a four-year degree for many jobs. If you want to become a network engineer, RF engineer, or systems architect, a bachelor's in electrical engineering, computer science, or telecom helps — but plenty of people earn it later, often paid for by their employer.

RF/wireless engineers, systems engineers, and cybersecurity analysts have the highest ceilings, with senior roles reaching $150k–$165k+. Network engineers and network architects also earn very well. On the technician side, tower techs and experienced fiber techs can earn strong money with overtime. The safest bet is a specialty you genuinely enjoy — telecom workers who keep learning new tech (like 5G or security) stay in demand and keep climbing.
