Everything you wanted to ask.

You don't need to be a straight-A student — you need to be curious, hands-on, and willing to keep learning. Automotive work rewards people who like solving real problems more than sitting in a classroom. Solid math and basic science help, and modern cars mean electronics and computers matter more every year, but plenty of top techs struggled with traditional school and thrive turning wrenches. Effort and reliability matter most.

For most hands-on roles — service technician, EV specialist, collision repair, diesel mechanic — no. A trade-school certificate, an associate degree, an apprenticeship, or employer training can provide a route in, and some programs prepare students to begin earning in one to two years. A four-year engineering or design degree is generally needed for professional vehicle-design and engineering roles. Many people start as technicians and move up from there.

On the engineering side, experienced autonomous-vehicle and software engineers can have some of the highest earning potential. On the hands-on side, experienced master technicians, EV/high-voltage specialists, and diagnostic technicians may earn considerably more in high-cost areas and performance-based roles. Moving into a lead, shop manager, or engineering manager role can lift pay further. Certifications and specialization can also increase earning potential.

Not for a long time. There are hundreds of millions of gas and hybrid vehicles on the road that will need service for decades. At the same time, EVs are creating brand-new, better-paid roles for techs who add high-voltage and battery skills. The smart move is to train on the fundamentals and then stack EV certifications — that combination makes you extremely valuable through the whole transition.
