Technology hiring is competitive and varies by occupation and experience level. Projects, internships, work experience, and a strong portfolio can help demonstrate skills, but employers may also require specific education, certifications, or related experience.

It depends on the occupation. BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for many software, data, cybersecurity, and systems roles. Some support, web, and technician positions accept certificates, associate degrees, demonstrated skills, or relevant experience. Always check current job requirements.

Pay varies significantly by occupation, experience, location, employer, and compensation structure. BLS reports 2025 median pay of $140,300 for computer and information research scientists, $135,980 for software developers, $129,180 for information security analysts, and $120,230 for data scientists. These are national medians, not starting salaries.

Registered apprenticeships and structured trainee programs are available for some technology roles. They combine paid work with instruction, but availability, eligibility, program length, education costs, and the occupations covered vary by employer and location.

No. This is one of the biggest myths in tech. Most everyday programming uses basic logic and problem-solving, not advanced math. You need to be comfortable with numbers and willing to think logically, but plenty of great developers were never math stars. Heavy math only comes up in specific areas like AI, graphics, and cryptography — and even then, you learn it as you go.
