About the role:
We are currently seeking a Shop Mechanic to join our Information Maintenance Shop at our Twentymile Mine location. Reporting to the Lead Supervisor-Shop. The scope of your role will be to perform maintenance work in surface shop as well as underground. This role offers a great opportunity for growth and to expand knowledge and skills.
Twentymile Mine is an underground coal mine located in Colorado’s scenic Yampa Valley about 20 miles outside Steamboat Springs, a ski resort and vacation destination. The surrounding area has towns both large and small including Oak Creek, Craig, Hayden, and Steamboat Springs. Hunting and fishing are very popular in this area. Shotgun and archery hunting is allowed on Peabody property for employees with proper authorization.
Peabody Twentymile has a safety-first culture and has been recognized two years in a row by the National Mining Association as the safest underground coal mine in the United States. The award recognizes coal and mineral mining operations with the lowest MSHA reportable injury rate. In 2023, Twentymile completed three years without a single reportable injury.
The Pay Rate for this position is $28/ hour.
Duties will include:
- General repair and preventative maintenance of diesel-powered equipment and light-duty vehicles. Maintenance and upkeep of surface buildings and compressor room

- Basic knowledge of hydraulics, mechanics, and electricity
- Basic knowledge of cutting and welding
- General knowledge of mining equipment
- Diesel experience helpful
- Self-motivated

- Energy, effort and initiative
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED
- Colorado L/MH electrical certification preferred.
- Certifications (Gas Card, Mine Foreman, EMT, Electrical) Preferred.
Physical requirements:
- Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces for up to the entire length of the shift
- Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
- Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time. Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom
- Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
- Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height
- Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on/off equipment and ladders
- Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms/legs and good hand-to-eye coordination
- Must have the ability to lift 25 – 50 lbs. on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 80 lbs.
- Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light/dark, in and around artificial light, and in a confined work area
- Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
- Must have the ability to work various shifts (required shifts include days, evenings and nights, with rotating schedules, weekends and holidays)

- an uncontrolled condition that is likely to cause loss of consciousness or ability to control a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
- an uncontrolled respiratory or cardiac dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
- a current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with the ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
- a current or unregulated mental or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with the ability to drive a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
- impaired hearing (with or without hearing aids) that would prevent the person from hearing crucial safety information or alarms;
- impaired vision. Individuals must meet the minimum vision requirements of at least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) with or without correction and at least 70° field of vision in horizontal meridian measured.
