What is Professional Services?

‘Professional services’ sounds vague, but it’s essentially an industry that provides support, advice, and guidance to organizations and businesses through a subset of professional skills and knowledge.

Professional services firms exist in many different industries. They include lawyers, advertising professionals, architects, accountants, financial advisers, engineers, and consultants – to name a few!

Consultants can work for any organization that offers customized, knowledge-based services to a broad cross-section of clients. These organizations act as consultancy firms and assist other businesses, government departments, public and private organizations. Some of the core professional services they offer include:

  • Financial services
  • Audit and tax services
  • Legal services
  • Administration and human resources
  • Project Management
  • Data Research and analytics

Professional services consultants work in numerous areas, including sales, agriculture, the arts, environment, tourism development, operations research, human resources, building and construction, public relations, events, and many more!

These organizations are also widely acknowledged for the quality graduate and early career programs they’ve developed, providing young people with exceptional experience and giving them a strong stepping stone into their future careers.

To succeed within top-tier professional services and consultancy, you’ll need exceptional analytical skills to evaluate the issues and solid problem-solving skills to resolve them efficiently. Effective communication and strong leadership skills are essential to implement positive changes for your clients.

You’ll be innately curious and proactive in expanding your expertise to build upon the general and specific knowledge required to be effective in your role and keep your company at the forefront of the services they deliver.

Securing entry into these organizations can be competitive, but they’re an excellent starting point to a long-term and sustainable career for the right person.

What is the EY Career Path Accelerator?

At EY, our shared vision is to make the accounting profession more affordable and accessible to students like you. One way we are doing this is by offering the EY Career Path Accelerator — a program designed to provide accredited business and elective courses toward the required 150 hours of education.  This is not a master’s program, but an alternative option to help students obtain the 150 hours of education required for CPA licensure.

EY Career Path Accelerator is an affordable, skills-focused way to accelerate your career path — job-related learning and skill development, the ability to enter the workforce CPA-eligible after your undergraduate degree, accredited coursework you can “take with you.”

Who is eligible?

Students who have accepted an EY internship offer and are actively pursuing an undergraduate degree that provides them the accounting hours they need to be eligible for CPA licensure. Interns are responsible for all accounting and state-specific credit hours prior to the start.

The EY Career Path Accelerator is about hands-on learning, real-world challenges and job-relevant skills to be day-one ready for full-time employment.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The ability to invite, leverage and learn from different perspectives is key to delivering for our clients.

Diversity is about differences. At EY, we think broadly about differences, which include nationality, background, education, gender, ethnicity, generation, age, working and thinking styles, religious background, sexual orientation, abilities, experiences, and technical skills. There are also differences according to geography, service line, sector and function.

Inclusiveness is about leveraging these differences to achieve better business outcomes. It is about creating an environment where EY people feel and are valued – where they feel they belong and contribute their personal best in every encounter.

We believe that only the highest-performing teams that maximize the power of different perspectives and backgrounds will succeed in the fast-changing environment brought by globalization. These teams are both diverse and inclusive, able to invite and learn from other perspectives. Our ability to include various viewpoints into our mindsets, behaviors and operations is fundamental to driving innovation, building strong relationships and delivering the best approaches for our clients.

It is more important than ever for organizations to create an environment where employees feel like they belong while also celebrating and recognizing uniqueness. It is fundamental to building an inclusive environment where all may thrive and relationships and innovation flourish.

EY Global Chairman and CEO, Carmine Di Sibio said that, “Diversity and inclusiveness are critical to building a better working world. Diverse opinions and skills lead to the best answers for our clients and our organization. We don’t get those diverse opinions and skills by bringing together people who look, think and act the same way, or who’ve had similar life experiences. We’re committed to building the highest-performing teams through the power of diversity and to providing equitable growth opportunities to our people around the world.”
