Electricians, Welders & Mechanics: Your Career Path with Peabody

Are you thinking about what’s next after graduation? If you’re into hands-on work and want a job that pays well without needing a four-year degree, Peabody Powder River Services might be your ticket. They’re a big player in the coal industry and are looking for people like you—especially if you’re interested in becoming an electrician, welder, or mechanic. They’ve got openings at three awesome mine sites in Wyoming: Caballo, North Antelope Rochelle Mine (NARM), and Rawhide. Let’s break it down:

Where You Could Work

  • Caballo: This spot is about 20 miles southeast of Gillette, Wyoming—a small town with a big energy vibe. Caballo’s connected to major railroads (BNSF and UP), so it’s a busy hub shipping out coal. With 465 million tons of coal still in the ground, this mine’s got a long future ahead, meaning steady work for years to come.
  • North Antelope Rochelle Mine (NARM): Located 65 miles south of Gillette, NARM is a superstar—it’s the world’s largest coal mine! They dig up the cleanest coal in the U.S., using high-tech tools and real-time planning to mix coal just right for customers. Bonus: Peabody offers free buses from towns like Gillette, Wright, Newcastle, Douglas, Glenrock, and Casper, so you don’t even need a car to get to work.
  • Rawhide Mine: Just 10 miles north of Gillette, Rawhide’s closer to town and uses big machines like dozers and trucks to move coal. In 2019, they sold 10.1 million tons—that’s a ton of action! It’s a great spot if you want to be near a community while learning the ropes.
Paid Internships: Test the Waters

If you’re not sure about jumping in full-time, try their paid internships. You’ll earn $23.25 per hour plus a $750 monthly stipend (that’s extra cash for gas or snacks!). It’s a sweet deal to get hands-on training while figuring out if this career fits you. You just need one year of related education—like a welding or auto shop class from high school—to qualify. Imagine spending your summer at a mine, learning from pros and banking some serious cash!

Full-time Gigs: Start Strong

Ready to go all-in after graduation? Full-time jobs pay between $25.95 and $38.61 per hour—way more than most entry-level gigs! Plus, you get benefits right away: health, vision, and dental insurance, a 401k match (free money for your future), and paid time off. You’ll work 12-hour shifts (6:30 to 6:30), rotating days and nights, with some weekends and overtime if you’re up for it. Safety’s huge here, so you’ll learn to work smart and keep your crew safe too.

Whether you’re into fixing things, working with your hands, or figuring out how stuff runs, Peabody’s got a spot for you. Sustainability

Our approach to sustainability is grounded in environmental, social, and governance practices that deliver further value across our business. As part of our approach, we utilize a risk management framework to assess risks and opportunities across our company and build actionable performance goals. We believe that coal will continue to be essential in the production of affordable, reliable, and secure energy and steel. We will continue to strengthen our position by aligning our strategy and practices with the goals of our stakeholders and expectations of our shareholders.

1. Emission Reductions: In 2023, Peabody reported a 5% decrease in emission intensity per ton of mined coal compared to 2022, alongside an overall reduction in emissions by more than 5%. This reflects efforts to lower their environmental footprint through operational improvements.

2. Renewable Energy Partnership: Peabody teamed up with RWE, a leading renewable energy company, to repurpose reclaimed mining land for renewable energy projects. This partnership, announced in recent years, leverages Peabody’s land resources, especially in the Midwest, to support clean energy development while utilizing their expertise in land reclamation.

3. Support for Clean Coal Research: In 2023, Peabody contributed $100,000 to the Consortium for Clean Coal Utilization at Washington University in St. Louis. This funding supports research into advanced coal technologies, carbon capture, and utilization, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of coal use.

4. Land Reclamation: Peabody continues to emphasize its reclamation efforts, restoring land previously used for mining. This not only mitigates environmental damage but also creates opportunities for new uses, like the renewable energy projects with RWE.

Peabody Energy is making strides to blend its coal legacy with a greener outlook. From cutting emissions and funding clean coal tech to turning old mine sites into renewable energy hubs, they’re showing a commitment to sustainability that fits their business and keeps high schoolers like you in mind—proving coal can evolve while still powering the world.
