Goodwill of North Georgia

Retail & Customer Service

At Goodwill of North Georgia, it starts with our mission. Our mission is to put people to work.

How it works:

We collect donated goods at our 100+ stores and donation centers. Then, we sell those items to bargain hunters in our Goodwill stores. We use those dollars to operate our career centers and to support job training and placement services offered free of charge to tens of thousands of North Georgia job seekers. We also offer online career services via CareerConnector.org.

Our facilities management business, Goodwill Industries of North Georgia, maintains jobs for more than 200 people with severe disabilities. Last fiscal year, those team members maintained more than 3 million sq. ft. of office space daily at nine federal government and commercial contract sites.

History

Established in 1925, we are a member of Goodwill Industries International, an association of more than 150 Goodwill agencies in North America and 12 Goodwills in other parts of the world. At more than 95 years old, we are one of the oldest nonprofits in the Atlanta metro area and the largest nonprofit as measured by number of employees. Geography

We serve a 45-county territory. With 100+ locations across North Georgia, we have a retail footprint larger than Target.

Impact

Through our career centers, Goodwill offers free job search resources such as résumé writing, access to job listings, and job fairs. We also offer training programs to help  prepare job seekers for careers in a variety of fields like technology, retail, logistics, healthcare, and construction. All services are provided to North Georgia job seekers at no charge. And, while we are here to help every job seeker, we provide extra support to our neighbors with the greatest needs: veterans, people with disabilities, opportunity youth, people experiencing homelessness, and people receiving public benefits who want to move out of poverty into self-sufficiency.

Last fiscal year we…

  • Connected over 24,000 North Georgians with jobs—that’s more than any other Goodwill in the country.
  • Served close to 50,000 job seekers in-person, including more people of color than any other Goodwill in the country.
  • Continued our economic impact of more than $1 billion annually through working with more than 5,000 employer partners, 39 public sector partners, 93 private foundation partners and 65 nonprofit partners.

Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose

Did you know it takes about 2,000 gallons of water to make a new pair of jeans? Items donated to Goodwill of North Georgia such as gently used jeans help to divert waste from local landfills.  For more than 90 years, we’ve pioneered the “reduce, reuse, repurpose” practice through our Goodwill donation centers.  In Fiscal Year 2021 alone, we diverted over 49 million pounds of waste from Georgia’s landfills.

The communities we serve

Goodwill of North Georgia has a territory of 45 counties in the North Georgia area and operates in 26 counties. In order to understand our agency, it is necessary to look at the census data of our state and territory.

In the race conversation, we desire to support those that have been marginalized (minorities), mirror the communities in which we serve and strive to close the gaps in the areas in which we underperform.

Currently our efforts will focus on:

  • American Indian and Alaska Native
  • Asian
  • Two or more races
  • Hispanic or Latinx

What do we look like?

Representation at Goodwill

Around 2010 we set a goal to diversify our agency to better mirror the communities we serve. One way to measure our progress is to look at the data when it comes to employing people of color. The chart below represents our diversity for people of color as of July 2020 and shows that we are emerging as a leader in this space, with over half of our employees being people of color in each tier of our agency. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals represent 74% of our team across all levels of the organization.

Our Board of Directors

By the same token, in the most recent years, we set a goal to diversify the Board of Directors.  42% (Forty-two) percent of current board members are BIPOC.  Women also make up 42% (forty-two) of board members.  Diversity is an ongoing priority and pillar for board recruitment efforts.  Click here to view our current board.

Diversification of recruitment efforts

Our jobs were sent to different kinds of community organizations at least 164,075 times in fiscal year 2020 (July 2019 – June 2020).

Decatur, GA – Goodwill of North Georgia, the leading workforce development nonprofit in the Southeast, is now the #1 Goodwill in the nation for helping jobseekers secure employment. The nonprofit is also the #1 Goodwill for serving African American jobseekers, as well as #1 for the number of people entering training-related employment (meaning the organization provided workforce development training to a jobseeker who was later employed in that field). Goodwill of North Georgia connected more than 27,000 North Georgians to jobs over the past year throughout its 45-county territory. “I am so proud that Goodwill of North Georgia is the top Goodwill in the nation for putting people to work. Each one of the 27,000 people we connected to employment represents an opportunity to transform a family and a community,” said Keith Parker, president and chief executive officer of Goodwill of North Georgia. “I would like to thank every Goodwill of North Georgia employee, volunteer, shopper, donor and partner for helping us become the number one Goodwill in the nation for workforce development. Together, we’re strengthening our communities one job at a time.” Each purchase at a Goodwill retail store helps to support the organization’s mission to put North Georgians to work. Goodwill of North Georgia uses the sale of donated goods to fund its programs and 13 career centers located across the region as well as its virtual career center, CareerConnector.org. All career centers are open to the public and equipped with the people and resources to help job seekers and micro business owners. Each center provides access to the internet, telephones, personalized coaching and various other resources needed for job searching. Goodwill of North Georgia career centers are free and open to any job seeker looking to make a career change or connect to high demand jobs in the area. The organization also helps people who face various obstacles to employment, including lack of work history, physical, mental and emotional disabilities, underemployment, and limited education. Additionally, Goodwill assists individuals with language barriers, criminal backgrounds, dependency on public assistance, and those facing various other barriers to employment.
